他們說：「來吧！我們要建造一座城和一座塔，塔頂通天，為要傳揚我們的名，免得我們分散在全地上。」耶和華降臨，要看看世人所建造的城和塔。耶和華說：「看哪，他們成為一樣的人民，都是一樣的言語，如今既做起這事來，以後他們所要做的事就沒有不成就的了。

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."  But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

他們有了建築的材料後，就更進一步高聲喊著說：「來吧！我們要建造一座城。」此舉顯然與神的旨意不符，因為神要他們「生養眾多，遍滿全地。」而他們卻要集中在城內，不願分散到各地去。現今世上有許多大城市，都擠滿了人口，許多人也都想往大城市去就業發展，可見這樣的心態至今仍然存在。

此外，他們還要在城中「建造一座塔，塔頂通天，為要傳揚自己的名。」此意更是與神的心意相違，人不將榮耀歸給神，卻要傳揚人自己的名。現今世上的大城市也似乎都有一座高塔，當年紐約的世貿大樓號稱是世上最高的建築物，不久就被其他的更高的建物超過了。如今台北市的101大樓暫居世界最高建物，相信不久還會有更高的出現，可見巴別塔的心態現今猶存。
