耶和華神在東方的伊甸立了一個園子，把所造的人安置在那裡。耶和華神使各樣的樹從地裡長出來，可以悅人的眼目，其上的果子好作食物。園子當中又有生命樹和分別善惡的樹。有河從伊甸流出來滋潤那園子，從那裡分為四道。第一道名叫比遜，就是環繞哈腓拉全地的。在那裡有金子，並且那地的金子是好的；在那裡又有珍珠和紅瑪瑙。第二道河名叫基訓，就是環繞古實全地的。第三道河名叫希底結，流在亞述的東邊。第四道河就是伯拉河。耶和華神將那人安置在伊甸園，使他修理看守。

Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground-trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

「東方」的出現表明神開始定方位，因為地球是圓的，必須先有「東」才會有「西」，有了「東西」才會有「南北」。然後在「伊甸」(經上最先出現的地名)立一個園子，因為「伊甸」原文字意是「快樂」(pleasure)，所以「伊甸園」就是「樂園」(paradise)。有關這個樂園的確實位置，經上沒有詳細記載，只提到「有河從伊甸流出來，滋潤那園子，從那裡分為四道。」目前只有兩道河流尚存，西底結河就是底格里斯河(the Tigris)，伯拉河就是幼發拉底河(the Euphrates)。由這兩條河所包圍之地稱為「兩河流域」，就是拉丁文稱為「米索坡達米亞」(Mesopotamia)的意思，在古世界這裡稱為「肥沃半月灣」，在舊約聖經稱為「示拿地」(創10:10)(創11:2)(但1:2)(亞5:11)(註：示拿的字意是兩河)，此處可以說是人類發源地。

雖然「伊甸園」的位置只提到在「東方的伊甸」，但是「生命樹」和「分別善惡樹」的位置卻有詳細記載，就在「園子當中」(in the middle of the garden)。「生命樹」和「分別善惡樹」是否是樹的名稱？通常樹的命名是因著它所結的果子，如蘋果樹結蘋果，橘子樹結橘子。是否「生命樹」可以結「生命」？「分別善惡樹」可以結「分別善惡」？當然不是，這兩棵樹原本就是「園中」(in the garden)的果樹，是用來作食物的。樹本身沒有比人高明，它是比人低等的受造物。但這兩棵樹是神所命定，果子除了供人作食物之外，另有神奇的果效。人若吃了「生命樹」的果子，就可以「與神同在」。人若吃了「分別善惡樹」的果子，就可以「如神一樣」。
